We live in Atoka,
TN, which is just 14 miles north of Memphis. We are living our dream of owning
a small farm surrounded by animals. We finally decided to make the move to the
country in late 1997, when there was just no
denying any longer that our African Spurred tortoises had outgrown their
backyard in the suburbs. We knew we had found where we belonged, when on a weekend drive, we
passed Sherri's aunt and uncle’s old house, and it was for sale. Sadly, they
have both been deceased for several years. But we are able to relive fond family
memories here.
We moved here with just our tortoises, cockatoos, a few leopard geckos, 2 rabbits, an iguana, a cat and 3 dogs. But our menagerie of animals quickly grew. We have wanted goats and llamas since 1989, when we were volunteers in the children’s petting zoo at Zoo Atlanta. Our first true farm animals were Pygmy goats in 1998. Then came the Nigerian Dwarf Goats in 1999. We now have about seventy Nigerians, around 10 chickens, 9 dogs, 2 cats, 2 miniature horses, and 2 mini pot-bellied pigs. We are trying to concentrate most of our efforts on our Nigerians, so we have given away our Pygmy goats, our reptiles, our cockatoos, and our llamas. Some of our tortoises were lucky enough to find a new home with Sunni and Terry Florence of Flat Rocks Farm in Azle, TX. They are taking wonderful care of them and spoiling them rotten. Flat Rocks Farm raises show quality Nigerian Dwarf goats. Our llamas were lucky enough to get a great new home with Erica Killion of Erica's Tiny Trotters in Drasco, Arkansas. Erica is a breeder of AMHA/AMHR national champion miniature horses. |
